COSME-Trained Entrepreneur Delivers Courage and WI Food

Tortola, BVI,  December 5, 2017 – COSME is a European Union funded programme, with the mission to support SME’s in the Caribbean OCT’s to grow competitive businesses.  There are some entrepreneurs that have more strength than that of Hurricane Irma; Mrs. S. A. Evans-Marlin MSc is such an entrepreneur. She is the principle of A & A Accounting and Consulting Services located in St. Maarten. She not only provides accounting services to businesses, but also teaches entrepreneurs how to do their own accounting through workshop instruction and COSME support.

After Hurricane Irma raged through St. Maarten, businesses and individuals shifted their focus to survival basics, food and shelter.  Ms. Evans-Marlin’s accounting business was put on hold, but she saw an opportunity. She pivoted, reignited and restarted - a true entrepreneur.

Having owned an eatery in the past, she possessed the skills to create appealing food dishes and the business savvy to launch a new eatery. She decided to reignite her skill as a chef and turn her home kitchen into a commercial kitchen. Ms. Evans-Marlin created food that could be packaged and delivered to sites where people were working and in need of food. People were thankful to have a service that provided good food delivered to their home or workplace, while they were busy rebuilding.  Many people were without power and water. This saved them time because they didn’t have to figure out what restaurants had re-opened after the hurricane and they didn’t need to leave their construction site. Mrs. Evans-Marlin delivers wherever requested, including offices, retail locations and homes.

With the ability to see a need in her community and the courage to act on it, Ms.Evans-Marlin is now about to take another brave step forward, moving her meal delivery business out of her home kitchen and open the doors to her new restaurant, Jamtillean's, in Simpson Bay.  Delivery service will still be a priority but guests will also be able to stop by and dine-in now.

“It is sincerely inspiring when we see this strength and resilience in OCT entrepreneurs, who are able to adapt and create new opportunities in what seems like a moment’s notice. It demonstrates the strength of COSME’s programme over the past two years and how adaptable the learned skills are for entrepreneurs.” says Diana Hendrickson-Fleming, COPA Key Expert/Team Leader.
